Run Supporter, Michael Wardian

Michael Wardian, 38, Arlington, Virginia named IAU Inaugural Athlete of the year in 2011.  He qualified for the Olympic Trials in 2004, 2008 and 2012.  The World 100k Championships awarded him a silver medal in 2011.

2012 is a big year for Michael.  Already he came in second in the Woodlands Marathon in Texas with a time of 2:21:38 and the next day took another second at the USATF Caumsett 50k Run in Huntington, NY with a time of 3:02:55.   Once again he came in 1st at the National Marathon in DC on March 17.  He has excelled at the Marathon Des Sables in the Sahara Desert, a 151 mile 6 day Moroccan stage race carrying your own gear. His first entry in 2000 earned him 26th place; then 10 years later he placed 3rd at 23:01:03 – the first American finisher.  His future plans include the 100k World Championship in Italy, the Western States Endurance (100 mile) and the Ultra Trail at Du Mont Blanc.  He wll try for a world record on the treadmill at the Boston Marathon.  And of course there will be training marathons in between the big races.

Motivated by challenge, Michael thrives when he thinks he might be in a little over his head. He maintains a strict training schedule running 100 miles a week including an hour on the treadmill coached by his two sons, Pierce and Grant.  Although he takes no supplements and is an octo-lacto vegetarian, he does love calzone and cheese.

Sponsors PowerBar, the NorthFace, and website Marathon Guide.com makes his grueling race schedule possible.

He dreams of summiting Mount Everest and competing in the Hawaii Iron Triathlon but is always working to get better at life, to express himself and to visit places. He derives great pleasure from helping and motivating others.
